10/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - MEP Alain Cadec (EPP, France) has welcomed the meeting in Brittany on Friday 7 May between European Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki and French fishermen. “The exchanges were fruitful and constructive. Individual transferable rights, common organisation of the market and technical measures were discussed. The fishermen expressed their opposition to the system of transferable rights which would result in rights being concentrated in the hands of the industry's big players and to having only one type of fishing gear on board which would lead to increased discards,” Cadec said in a press release. Damanaki restated her desire to get proposals from fishermen on regionalisation. “She will give the guidelines on catches which the fishermen will put into practice depending on the reality of the situation,” Cadec said.
