Number of applications for European patents and patents granted falls for first time in 20 years

Brussels, 30/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - The economic crisis has had an impact on innovation. Its effects are being felt in the number of requests filed for European patents with the European Patents Office (EPO). Numbers have fallen for the first time in 20 years. In 2009, the EPO received 135,000 applications, 8% fewer than in 2008. The number of patents granted also fell (-13%) from 59,800 units in 2008 to 52,000 in 2009.
