Valentin Inzko warns against secessionist remarks from Republika Srpska

Brussels, 16/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - Milorad Dodik, Prime Minister of Republika Srpska (RS), has written to Catherine Ashton to complain of a EUFOR report to the Security Council in which it apparently notes that Bosnian Serbs are violating the Dayton Accords and that their leaders “from time to time … bring into question BH's integrity as a state and have mentioned the possibility of secession”. These allegations are false, says Dodik, who confirms, however, that he intends to organise a referendum to ask the electorate its opinion on the imposition of laws by the HR. Valentin Inzko, who was in Brussels on 16 April to report to the EU Political and Security Committee (COPS), said he will continue to condemn any idea of SR secession. “There would be no peaceful dissolution of BH”, he told a small group of journalists. “We should take it seriously even if these declarations are being made in the context of elections. We should not allow such language against the territorial integrity of BH”, said Inzko, who also said Dodik's idea to hold a referendum is “poisoning the atmosphere”. The EU/Balkans summit that the Spanish Presidency intends to convene for 2 June in Sarajevo could be the moment to “announce” the visa waiver for citizens of Bosnia by the end of the year. Inzko also hopes that the progress made by neighbouring countries (Croatia, Serbia, etc) on the road to European integration will also have an incentive effect on Bosnia. (H.B./transl.jl)
