Brussels, 07/04/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU Foreing Affairs Council later this month will discuss the political situation in Madagascar, explained Spanish foreign minister and acting-president of the Council Miguel Ángel Moratinos at the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly in Tenerife on (27 March - 2 April).
Louis Michel, co-chair of the JPA, had previously expressed the JPA's concerns about Madagascar and called for tighter sanctions to be imposed on the country. He said that he was receiving very worrying and horrendously disturbing information from Madagascar and it would be a good idea for the EU Council to strengthen the position it has taken, and for the sanctions decided upon by the African Union to be boosted in order to give greater weight and credit to them. He explained that it would be very difficult for the AU to make its sanctions credible if the EU did not align itself with them. (A.N./transl.fl)
