Brussels, 26/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 24 March, Véronique Mathieu (EPP, France) reminded the member states of the EU of their duty to cooperate on combating terrorism, after a French police officer was killed by the Basque terrorist organisation ETA. “ETA has been responsible for the deaths of almost 830 people over 40 years, but this is the first time that this terrorist organisation has killed a French police officer,” Mathieu said, acknowledging the exemplary cooperation in criminal and police matters between France and Spain. She said, however, that “this cooperation between our police services and judges was not enough to prevent the death” of a police officer on 16 March. “This tragic event must lead our governments to increase the quality and scale of cooperation,” she argued.
