Brussels, 08/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - Far from the attention focused recently on the major natural disasters that heave struck Haiti and Chile, the European Commission has been pursuing its humanitarian aid to other regions of the world to temper crises in Africa, Asia and Latin America. International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva has announced that, in February, the Commission made available €375 million in response to natural disasters, conflicts, epidemics, food insecurity and chronic poverty. The money allocated was as follows: Sudan €114 million, Middle East €58 million, Democratic Republic of Congo €45 million, Afghanistan €33 million, Chad €28 million, Sahel € 20 million, Myanmar (and Burmese refugees in Thailand) €17.25 million, Burundi (and refugees in Tanzania) €15 million, Colombia €12 million, Central Africa €5 million, Philippines €5 million. €15 million were allocated to United Nations agencies and international organisations to enhance their overall humanitarian response capabilities, and €8.1 million went on ECHO Flight humanitarian flights in sub-Saharan Africa.
