Negotiations in “troubled waters”, De Gucht says

Brussels, 05/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in New Delhi on Thursday 4 March, European Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and Indian Trade Minister Anand Sharma discussed ways to overcome current difficulties in order to make progress in the multilateral trade talks of the Doha Round. The two men agreed to hold a ministerial meeting between April and the G20 summit in June in Toronto in order to bring the Round to a successful conclusion for the end of 2010, as requested by the G20 leaders. Speaking to the press, De Gucht again spoke of 2011 as a more realistic date for concluding the unending talks that began in 2001. “At this moment in time, the Doha negotiations are in heavy waters. If the G20 leaders are tasking us to come to a deal, then there should also be the necessary margin of manoeuvre to come to a deal”, the commissioner stressed. (E.H./transl.jl)
