01/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - Amnesty International is asking the European Union to turn protection of human rights into a cornerstone of its domestic security strategy, an issue discussed at the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 25 and 26 February 2010. In a letter to the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, Amnesty International highlights the need to decide on the liability of member states allegedly involved in the CIA's secret detention system in Guantánamo. Nicolas Beger, the director of Amnesty International, commented that the EU should do more than simply show a formal interest in the idea of a European Union based on the values and principles set out in the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and should put human rights on an equal footing with other issues connected with security cooperation and intelligence.
