Brussels, 18/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - José Manuel Barroso and his 26 commissioners will be in Madrid next Tuesday (23 February) for the traditional meeting with the government of the country holding the Union's rotating presidency. The meeting, initially scheduled for 8 January, had been deferred due to the delay incurred in appointing the new Commission which did not take up office until 10 February. Spain's Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero and his ministers will review the EU Presidency's work programme with the Commission. Special emphasis will be placed on preparing the new economic strategy (EU 2020) for which the Commission has still to present its proposal. On this subject, the Presidency will call on the Commission to “speed things up” so that the “broad outlines of the new strategy may be in place for the European Council on 25-26 March”, according to information published on Thursday on the Presidency website (http://www.eu210.es ).
