Investigation into Chinese paper imports

Brussels, 18/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 18 February, the European Commission began an anti-dumping investigation into imports of coated fine paper sheets from China, according to an opinion published in the EU Official Journal. Paper or carton sheets or rolls displaying certain characteristics in weight or colour are being targeted. The Commission is subsequently responding to a complaint lodged at the beginning January by the European Fine Paper Manufacturers Association (Cepifine). It has 15 months to establish whether the Chinese paper is being sold in Europe below its resale price and to decide whether to impose anti-dumping duties or not. At the end of an investigation criticising Chinese public subsidies of 10.90 - 20.35% on this type of product, the US decided in 2007 to impose compensatory anti-dumping duties on fine paper from China, which was mainly used for digital photographs. Beijing responded sharply to this complaint and took the matter to the WTO in autumn 2007. (E.H./transl.fl)
