03/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 1 February, the European Commission adopted a proposal which would amend Regulation 23/2010 on fishing opportunities for 2010, in order to accommodate the arrangements in the bilateral agreements signed by the EU with the Faroe Islands (agreement reached on 15 January, see EUROPE 10060) and Norway (consultations successfully completed on 26 January, see EUROPE 10065). The proposed regulation, which has still to be adopted by the Council, also transposes into EU law the decisions taken in 2009 by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission: - two high seas areas closed to fishing for bigeye and yellowfin tuna by purse seine vessels; - and a limit on catches of swordfish for each member of the regional fisheries organisation.
