Ministers give go-ahead for Member States to provide aid to buy up farmland

Brussels, 16/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 16 December 2009, the EU Member States' farm ministers decided unanimously to allow Lithuania, Latvia and Hungary to provide state aid on an exceptional basis to buy up farmland in 2010 to 2013. The European Commission opposes this but the decisions were taken unanimously after eight Member States abstained (Estonia, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Spain and Sweden).
