Brussels, 11/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - EU police forces have smashed a paedophile network that published 9,700 indecent images of children and child pornography on the internet from a website in Austria and have arrested 115 people over the course of two years, explained Europol on Thursday 10 December 2009. The police work was coordinated by the European Police Office and involved searches in 18 member states (Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Malta, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Romania, Austria, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom), Switzerland and Canada. Two Austrians have been charged with taking the photographs and publishing them online. An internet service provider first raised the alarm about the paedophile ring. The police operation was code-named Typhoon. It was able to identify five children aged 4 to 12 from five different EU countries, victims of this ring of child-abusers. (B.C./transl.fl)
