17/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - With criticism increasing at the use of the dollar as the reserve currency, Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Dominique Strauss-Kaun, speaking at a conference in China on Tuesday 17 November, raised the possibility of establishing a new reserve currency based on Special Drawing Rights (SDR). “It will probably be a basket. In a globalised world, there is no longer any place for national solutions,” he said. Elsewhere, President of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet said, in an interview with French daily Le Monde on the same day, that “the euro was not set up to compete with the US dollar or to take over from the dollar as the international reserve currency”, but to “complete the European market and to bring stability and prosperity to Europe”.
