26/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, hopes an agreement will be reached between the two candidates in the run-off presidential election in Afghanistan on 7 November, with a view to forming a government of national unity between the two candidates, incumbent President Hamid Karzaï and the former foreign minister, Abdullah Abdullah, “There should be concessions in the end: it is impossible with the result of the first round not to have relations between the two candidates”, Solana said on TV5 Monde, on Sunday 25 October. “It is not easy. I do not know how it should be done. There should be an agreement between the two to govern the country. I think it would be stupid not to create the conditions for an agreement on a national unity government”, he added.
