Brussels, 21/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 21 October, European Commission Vice-President, Frenchman Jacques Barrot, authorised the return of Afghans by charter flights, with a joint Franco-British specially chartered flight having taken off from Paris with three Afghans who had illegally entered France on board. There were two major conditions for the forced repatriation of migrants, the commissioner said. “Firstly, the authorities have to ascertain that no migrant wants to submit a request for international protection or that his/her request has been turned down after thorough examination and, secondly, that the lives of repatriated migrants will not be in danger,” he stated. “According to our information, this afternoon's flight met those conditions,” he said, pointing out that he would continue to keep a close eye on things to ensure that there was no infringement of Community law.
