23/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Geneva from 3-19 June, the International Labour Conference adopted the Global Jobs Pact, which meets the immediate needs of workers while laying the foundations for equitable globalisation (EUROPE 9911). Guy Ryder, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), said that employment, workers' rights, social protection, access to quality public services and sustainability must appear at the heart of global policy decisions, thus marking a break with the failure of a zealous free market policy which lies at the origin of the crisis. He added that, while some voluntarily chose a return to status quo, the ILO clearly states such a position would not be acceptable. (G.B./tansl.jl)
