11/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The study on «climate change and employment» carried out for the European Commission by a consortium made up of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), the Social Development Agency (SDA, France), the Wuppertal Institute and ISTAS (Spain), reveals that climate change and the policies implemented for containing climate change are a serious and first-ever challenge for employment in Europe. The study examines: (1) the potential impact that climate change has on employment in Europe, and (2) the effect on transition jobs towards a less CO2 intensive European economy by 2030 in four key economic areas: energy production, transport, the steel and cement industry and building/construction.. Case studies in 11 EU member states have also been carried out. Research is based on an ambitious prospect of 40% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2030 compared to 1990.
