Brazil tries to breathe new life into global trade round

Brussels, 11/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - After the first EU-Brazil summit in Lisbon, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to greater liberalisation of global trade under a World Trade Organisation (WTO) deal, the Brazilian government is trying to get the Doha trade round out of the current deadlock. Brazilian foreign minister (who is also head of the Brazilian negotiating team for Doha), Celso Amorim, will be in Europe next week to try and get the ball rolling. This move was agreed in a telephone conversation on Monday between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Lula's spokesman, Marcelo Baumbach, told reporters. Baumbach added that Lula had also suggested to Merkel that a meeting of heads of state be organised to resolve the deadlock and Merkel had not opposed the idea. Amorim will be visiting the WTO headquarters in Geneva and holding a meeting in an, as yet undefined, European capital city with EU WTO negotiators, representatives of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the EU and representatives of the German government.
