16/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 15 March the European Parliament adopted the report from Louis Grech (PES, Malta) on the EU institutions draft budget for 2007, and insisted on the need to improve communications with citizens and ensure the success of the enlargement of the EU (Romania and Bulgaria). Given current financial constraints, it preferred to “reserve its position” on voluntarily limiting the operating budget to 20% of total EU administrative spending. It “entreated” the Council to take a decision on the regime applicable to other European Community agents so that “ideally” the statute of Parliamentary assistants could come into force from 2009. It also requested that the possibility of setting up in Brussels a centre of Europe Houses (cultural events, training seminars, exhibitions etc).
