Strasbourg, 16/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - In its long list of resolutions (71 points) on the Spring Summit (which we will publish in full), on Wednesday the EP inserted a passage on the recent displays of “economic patriotism” in several EU countries. Adopting an ALDE group amendment (by 387 votes to 202), Parliament expressed its deep concern at the actions taken by a growing number of national governments who were seeking to take or had already taken defence and protection measures on behalf of national industries or companies. It considered that these measures were an attack on the basic principles of the internal market as soon as they created obstacles to the right of establishment of nationals from other member States or free movement within the Community. It called on the European Commission to be more frank and clear in defence of the internal market, including in the fields of energy and financial services. At his press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Graham Watson, leader of the ALDE group, said he wanted this problem of massive assaults on the internal market to be dealt with at heads of state and government level.
