08/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Antonio Marzano, Italian Minister for Productive Activities, has written to the European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson to thank him for the “sensitivity” he has shown in the problem of unfair competition against Italian production of quality textile, footwear and clothing by often counterfeit products from some Asian countries (see EUROPE of 26 February, p.6, on the subject of Commissioner Mandelson's speech in Beijing). The first data on imports of these products from China “confirm the gravity of the phenomenon”, the minister says, adding: “We certainly do not wish for customs tariffs to be introduced (except those known as anti-dumping duties), but rather full and specific implementation of the safeguard measures that Community mechanisms provide given the clear violations of the principles of fair competition on the part of third countries”.
