06/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Angelika Beer MEP (German Green) welcomed the European Commission's decision to provide EUR 140 million for de-mining and victims of anti-personnel mines. At the end of the international conference in Nairobi on anti-personnel mines last Friday, Ms Beer underlined the results obtained since the entry into force of the Ottawa Convention five years ago but regretted the balance sheet for the current situation - 100 mines still in place around the world - well short of the goals. The action plan adopted in Nairobi calls on countries that have not yet signed up to the Nairobi Convention to do so. Ms Beer said that it was irresponsible and disrespectful that Russia was still using anti-personnel mines and that the USA and China continued to refuse to ratify the Ottawa Convention.
