28/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Monday evening, Spain threatened to appeal to the Court of Justice to secure additional fishing rights in the North Sea ad the Baltic following expiry, on 31 December last, of restrictions to these waters (provided for in its act of accession in 1986). Spanish Minister Miguel Arias Canette announced this to the press on the fringe of the Agriculture-Fisheries Council, in which Ireland also raised the problem of access to western waters, calling for a "rapid" solution to the expiry of the "Irish Box". You may recall that, since 1 January, Spain has theoretically the right to fish more in Irish waters, but only for species that are not subject to limits on catches.
