28/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Before Wednesday's debate in plenary, some EP leaders have called for the war in Iraq to be averted. "Although Iraq has not fully co-operated, nothing that we have heard (from the UN inspectors) warrants military intervention", says Daniel Cohn-Bendit, leader of the Greens/EFA Group. According to him, the inspectors must be given the time necessary, which "does not mean a few weeks, but several months", time that can be used to find a peaceful solution. Graham Watson, leader of the Liberal Group, notes that Hans Blix's arguments accusing Saddam Hussein are "powerful", but that the inspectors have not yet provided "proof beyond reasonable doubt". Saddam must answer the accusations, "and the court of the international community has to reach its verdict", Watson warns.
