29/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - This time it is not just the Greeks but also the British who are appealing for the return of the Parthenon (Elgin) marbles to Athens from the British Museum in London. Liberal Democrat, Nick Clegg, MEP, organised a conference on the "Marbles in Exile" in an effort to obtain a commitment from the British Museum to return the marbles to Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. Nick Clegg said that the marbles in London was a bit like Paris organising an exhibition of Big Ben in Paris. MEP, Richard Allan, Liberal Democrat and one of the initiators of the campaign believed that the return of the Elgin Marbles would be an historical and farsighted gesture. Presidents Cox and Pöttering and the Greek Minister of Culture, Venizelos, inaugurated a photographic exhibition on the Parthenon at the EP on 29 May.
