Brussels, 29/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - By organising the European Cinema Heritage Week, the European Commission intends to raise awareness among Europeans about the richness of European cinema and promote reflection initiatives and education about the visual image, in co-operation with the Netdays 2002 initiative which focused on this subject this year. Sponsored by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, the first week will run from 15-23 November and it is hoped that the even will be organised on an annual basis. It also seeks to mobilise the European networks of film libraries and the "Europa Cinémas network" in around 50 European cities. The public and professionals will be able to attend films representing European cultural diversity and discuss the economic imperatives involved in the cinema industry. The television industry has also been invited to mobilise in a similar way and a series of measures in schools supported by education ministers.
