10/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - European Liberal Democrat Graham Watson, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Citizens' Freedoms and Rights, said that "unless a way to overcome these differences can be found, we will be unable to secure the necessary judicial cooperation between democracies across the Atlantic in the fight against terrorism". "The logical next step is for a fast track extradition agreement with the USA and I look forward to Jose Maria Aznar's proposals for this", said Mr Watson in a statement. He stressed that "it would be legally impossible for the EU or its member States to agree to trials which would not conform to the requirements of the European Convention on Human Rights". He recalls that the US Justice Minister, John Ashcroft confirmed that the Administration plans to establish military tribunals for the trial of terrorists in which the accused "may not have the right to an independent lawyer" and in which a verdict may be reached by 2/3 of the jurors.
