Klaus Peter Kleiber nominated EU special representative to Afghanistan

Brussels, 10/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the General Affairs Council nominated Klaus Peter Klaiber as European Union special representative to Afghanistan. Deputy secretary for NATO political affairs until September, of German nationality, Klaus Peter Klaiber has as mandate "to contribute, in close cooperation with the special representative for the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Brahimi, to who he will provide assistance, towards the implementation of the Union policy in Afghanistan, notably by providing support to the contribution provided by the Union to achieve the aims of the international community in Afghanistan. His role will be to: support the establishment in Afghanistan of a stable and legitimate multiethnic government; - establish close contact with the Afghan leaders and with international or regional actors; - remain in close contact with the neighbouring countries and other interested countries in the region; - advise the High Representative for CFSP and the EU Council on how the situation develops; - and give advice on Union participation at international conferences on Afghanistan and on the positions that the Union is to adopt.
