THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/sakharov prize

10/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the end of last week, Nicole Fontaine wrote to Shimon Peres, Israeli Foreign Minister, calling on him to do what is necessary so that the two winners of the Sakharov Prize 2001, Israeli Nurit Peled-Elhanan and Palestinian Izzat Ghazzawi, may travel to Strasbourg "together and accompanied by their families". The awarding ceremony will take place on Wednesday. Recalling that the two prizewinners, "both writers who each lost a child during acts of violence, have chosen to engage in actions to promote peace rather than to react with hatred", the EP President stresses in her letter that Mr Ghazzawi "lives in Rammallah and cannot at the present time leave the town" (although he and his family have a visa for France).
