05/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission recently adopted by written procedure the regulation providing for abolition of the import tax of 10 euro per tonne applicable to cereals from ports on the Mediterranean, in the Black Sea and in the Baltic Sea. The low support afforded by the Member States to this proposal at the management committee on 11 October and the continual pressure exerted by some professionals have therefore not discouraged the Commission from its intention to tackle Community preference head on in order to reach prices within the EU that area as close as possible to those on the world market. This border protection system will officially come to an end on 9 November (see EUROPE of 13 October, p.12).
