THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/commission/enlargement

31/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement is "the true mission of my Commission, the aim of my life", asserted the European Commission President Romano Prodi when answering, on Tuesday afternoon, a question from a Polish student, during the dialogue that he had with students at Science Po, after his speech on "a strong Europe, provided with a major project and means for action" (see EUROPE on 30 May, P.5). In a amphitheatre full to bursting point, Mr Prodi noted that the decision on financing to be made after 2006 "will be difficult", but will be "taken together". As for the fear of a massive influx of workers from the new Member States, he stated: "we need to be reasonable. When the Italians entered the Community, they stopped emigrating, not because they all became rich, but because there was hope".
