11/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - The details of the agreement between the European Union and the Yugoslav Republic over the deployment of European observers in south-eastern Serbia were published in the Official Journal (OJ L 125 of 5 May). In fact, this agreement, signed on 25 April, had already "provisionally" taken effect and some thirty European observers - of the hundred or so that make up the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in the Balkans - are already working in the south-east of Serbia, Council sources remind us. According to the terms of the agreement, European monitors, who make regular reports, are responsible for "monitoring developments of the political situation and security", "paying special attention to border surveillance, inter-ethnic issues and the return of refugees", "drawing up reports" and "contributing to the Council's early warning system, and restoring trust". For its part, Belgrade undertakes to ensure the safety of the observers and respect their diplomatic immunity.
