On Thursday, BRITISH TELECOM (BT), the incumbent British operator, announced its division into two companies. The first, BT WIRELESS, will regroup its mobile telephone activities presently scattered within BT CELLNET (mobile telephones), its European subsidiaries VIAG INTERKOM (Germany), TELFORT (Netherlands), ESAT DIGIFONE (Ireland) and MANX (Isle of Man), as well as the portal INTERNET GENIE. The group hopes to float BT WIRELESS on the stock market by the end of 2001. On the other hand, the present BT will be renamed FUTURE BT and will include the European activities presently scattered within its divisions BT RETAIL (retail sales), BTOPENWORLD (Internet), BT WHOLESALE (company sales) and BT IGNITE (broadband data transport for companies). Moreover, BT announced its intention to sell its directory division YELL (Yellow pages).
