07/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Speaking before the regional committee of the European Parliament, the Swedish Minister for Regional Policy stressed the "courageous approach" adopted by the European Commission in its second report on cohesion, approved last Wednesday (see EUROPE of 1 February, p.9). Ulrica Messing said she shared the Commission's position whereby the discussions should focus on substance before tackling financing issues. "Time will be needed to discuss all that", said the minister, who was asked by Georg Jarzembowski (EPP, Germany), as he opened the debates, to "show proof of a little more boldness over the next six months". Minister Messing did not mention the informal Council that Sweden foresees organising on the question early May. It would seem, however, that the holding of this meeting is confirmed - even though it must still receive official confirmation from the Swedish authorities.
