EP wants more say

Brussels, 07/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Regarding the European Commission's communication on EU assistance in elections in third countries, the EP's Foreign Affairs Committee has adopted a resolution tabled by Giovanni Claudio Fava (Democratici di sinistra) which, in particular, states that the European Parliament should be alone in being able to determine and composition and duration of a Parliamentary election monitoring mission, and that it should set up an "Election Coordination Group". According to the resolution, to be voted on in Strasbourg in March, the European Commission should, for its part, set up an "election unit" that would work closely with Parliament.
