06/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - Parliament get green light for cyber security directive. On Wednesday, 6 July, the European Parliament endorsed the agreement reached with the Council on a common framework for the cyber security field (NIS directive). In the previous day, during a debate, Commissioner Günther Oettinger welcomed this compromise and explained that it was even better than the measures initially proposed. The new directive will apply from the beginning of 2019 and includes a list of sectors in which companies providing essential services (e.g. energy, transport and the banking sector) must be able to prove that they are capable of resisting cyber attacks. The draft directive compels them to flag up security incidents to the national authorities. Digital service providers such as Amazon and Google will also have to notify major attacks to the national authorities. These new cyber security rules also seek to strengthen cooperation between member states in the event of cyber attacks. (SPj)
