03/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - Finalists of European Green Capital 2018 announced. Six European cities are in the running in the final stage to become European Green Capital 2018 or European Green Leaf 2017, awards for environmental excellence. The finalist cities were revealed by European Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella on Tuesday 3 May. For the title of European Green Capital, the finalists are 's-Hertogenbosch and Nijmegen of the Netherlands and Umea of Sweden. For European Green Leaf, the finalists are Cornellà de Llobregat of Spain, Galway of Ireland and Mikkeli of Finland. In this final stage, they will have to present their vision for a sustainable future to the jury. The winners will be announced on 22 June 2016. The Commission has also launched calls for applications for the 2019 European Green Capital and 2018 European Green Leaf Awards. (AN)
