Brussels, 03/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - The themes of the sixth EU-US Energy Council in Washington DC on 4 May will be cooperation for energy security and the diversification of resources, with special attention being paid to the trade of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The European delegation led by High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and flanked by two commissioners responsible for energy issues - Maros Sefcovic (Energy Union) and Miguel Arias Canete (Energy and Climate) - will be hosted by US Secretary of State John Kerry and US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz.
As well as climate protection and the trade of LNG, European and American representatives will address issues relating to the implementation of fair and transparent global energy markets, the promotion of energy efficiency, investment in energy infrastructure and the deployment of new technologies. The cyber-security of energy infrastructure and cooperation on nuclear safety will also feature on the agenda.
In addition, the EU-US Energy Council will discuss global energy cooperation with Caribbean, Asian, African and Middle Eastern countries, as well as its support for the progressive integration of Ukraine into the European energy market.
“Working together with the US on bilateral and global energy issues will help us keep up the momentum to achieve a resilient and climate-friendly energy system globally”, Sefcovic stated ahead of the meeting. “Close cooperation between the EU and US is crucial in keeping up the global pressure to make sure what we agreed in Paris, and signed in New York [on 22 April - see EUROPE 11539], becomes a reality”, Canete added.
Created in 2009, the EU-US Energy Council is aimed at promoting transatlantic cooperation, good governance and transparency in the area of energy. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
