On Wednesday 8 October, the European Commission announced that it had approved requests for the registration of two new French protected geographical indications (PGI): 'Jambon de Vendée' and 'Pomelo de Corse'. 'Jambon de Vendée' (PGI) is a raw, deboned ham in parallelepiped shape; its traditional production, which includes successive stages of hand-rubbing (using dry sea salt, followed by rubbing with herbs and spices and liqueur), followed by a short drying time by being pressed between two wooden planks, gives it a particularly tender and unctuous texture, a slightly salty taste, a fruity odour and a light pink colour. 'Pomelo de Corse' (PGI) is a very juicy seedless citrus fruit, with an aromatic and sugary taste, smooth yellow skin and pink or red flesh. Having been grown on the island of Corsica for 30 years, the fruit is hand-harvested when fully ripe and is not treated after harvest.
