The violent clashes in Albania on Friday of last week (see also related article) are “unacceptable for a European country and for a state that aspires to become a member of the EU”, MEP Marietje Schaake (ALDE, Netherlands) has said, and she has called for the EU to appoint a “mediator” to help Albania's leaders break the deadlock. “High Representative Catherine Ashton should nominate an EU mediator for Albania to restore calm and sensible political discourse” between government and opposition, Schaake said in a press release. She also calls on the European Parliament to debate the situation in Albania at the next plenary session. (H.B./transl.rt)
