20/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament is extremely concerned by the fragility of the state and political crisis in Haiti, and by the impasse in reconstruction efforts and the inability of the state to deal with cholera, even though the disease is easy to prevent and to treat. In the resolution adopted on 19 January, it stresses that the humanitarian workers, whose work is remarkable, “should not and cannot continue to compensate for the weaknesses of the Haitian state, or do its job for it”. The Parliament calls on the EU to do all in its power to support a transparent and legitimate election process, and the correct unfolding of the second round of presidential elections, because “reconstruction calls for stability and political goodwill”.
