07/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - Ahead of the 17 June Economic Council that will decide on the EU's negotiating position for the 27-27 June G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, points out in a memorandum to EU commissioners that the EU has to have trade ambitions to match its aim of reaching an ambitious, over-arching and balanced Doha Trade Agreement. He adds that the G20 has to show its leadership and call on its negotiators to make a determined effort to rapidly reach agreement based on progress thus far and to regularly review the situation. Barroso said the G20 leaders must also re-state their rejection of protectionism and repeat the need for the lifting of protectionist measures that have already been taken. (E.H./transl.fl)
