Brussels, 07/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 4 June, EU27 justice ministers decided to harmonise sentences and penalties for human trafficking and endorsed a general approach to the issue unveiled by the European Commission in March 2010 (see EUROPE 10108). The document requires member states to take action in three areas - pursuing criminals, protecting victims and crime prevention. The definition of human trafficking has been fine-tuned and now includes begging and forced organ donation. Legal aid will be provided free-of-charge to victims meeting certain conditions. The ministers discussed a plan to combat child pornography but progress is problematic in this area because the member states cannot agree on the definition of major crimes like watching and downloading child pornography and blocking websites providing child pornography. The Council adopted guidelines on continuing work on the regulation on a relatively complex area of legislation, cross-border inheritance (see EUROPE 9997). The Council adopted a roadmap on e-justice, the EU's new website that is scheduled to start in the summer. (B.C./transl.fl)
