23/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of the German, French and British foreign ministers (see EUROPE 10100), on Monday 22 March, the Council adopted conclusions expressing the EU's “grave concern” over the jamming of foreign television and radio channels and blocking of the internet in Iran. This deliberate interference has also affected European services broadcast by EUTELSAT. “The jamming of TV and radio satellite broadcasting runs counter to the undertakings given by the Islamic Republic of Iran itself in the context of the International Telecommunications Union,” member states say in their conclusions. The EU also calls on Iran to respect freedom of expression “as set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that the Islamic Republic of Iran has signed and ratified “.
