15/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Cypriot government is not happy that the European Commission, in its regular report on Turkey adopted on Wednesday of this week (see EUROPE 9998), did not call for further sanctions against Ankara should it not immediately open its ports and airports to Cypriot vessels and planes. The Commission notes in its report that Turkey is still not complying with its obligations under the additional protocol to the Ankara Agreement on the customs union but “we are disappointed” that it did not recommend that member states launch fresh sanctions in December, said Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou. At the end of 2006, the EU suspended eight chapters in negotiations talks for this same reason. This decision is to be reviewed in December. In the meantime, it was learned on Thursday that the governmental programme of the incoming CDU/CSU/FDP coalition in Germany will not rule out Turkey's accession to the EU at some point in the future (as the CSU in particular would have wantred, see EUROEP 9998).
