EU to back Blaise Compaore's work as facilitator for peaceful solution to guinea crisis

Brussels, 07/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 6 October, the Swedish Presidency of the EU expressed the EU's pleasure that the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaore, has been appointed as a facilitator in the crisis in Guinea. In a statement, the Presidency welcomes his appointment by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the international Guinea contact group.

The EU repeated its criticism of the bloody repression on 28 September of a peaceful demonstration organised by opponents of the Dadis Camara regime (see EUROPE 9987). The EU says it will be supporting the facilitation work of Blaise Compaore, the African Union and the United Nations to ensure a peaceful and sustainable solution to the crisis, and pledged support for the work of the international Guinea contact group.
