07/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - EU Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg was awarded the Elisabeth Mann Borgese Prize in Kiel, Germany, on Tuesday 6 October 2009 by the Land (region) of Schleswig-Holstein. The prize is awarded for remarkable achievements to the benefit of the seas and oceans, explains a press release. The prize is awarded each year to figureheads working to protect and preserve the marine environment. Joe Borg won the prize for his contribution to an integrated EU maritime policy. During his visit to Germany, the commissioner attended the launch in Hamburg of the Skysails pilot project to test wind-powered fishing vessels.
