06/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - After last week putting forward Mario Draghi as a possible successor to Jean-Claude Trichet (from October 2011), Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has tempered his comments, preferring to make the presidency of the Eurogroup the target of Italian ambition. In an interview with daily Corriere della Sera of 6 October, Frattini says that it is too early to talk about candidates for the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB), which will depend on internal procedures and rules that are not yet known. However, “the Eurogroup is something that is decided among governments, and because of this, the Italian government can, as Silvio Berlusconi has done, express support” for Giulio Tremonti (Economy and Finance Minister), he says. Current Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker was re-elected at the end of 2008 for a third, usually two-year, term of office. (A.B./transl.rt)
