06/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - To tackle the illegal art trade and raise awareness among art sellers, the world police organisation Interpol has been organising virtual tours of stolen artwork currently being sought. The online catalogue contains works of arts registered as stolen for more than 50 years in the 187 Interpol member states. A total of 34,000 works, some of immense value, are listed in 26 categories. The Interpol artwork coordinator, Karl Heinz Kind, commented that registering a stolen artwork or cultural heritage in the Interpol artwork database and allowing the general public to access the database are serious obstacles to the illegal trade in stolen artwork by making it more difficult to pass off stolen goods.
